National Cathedral

Officially named the Cathedral Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, had its beginnings in 1893 when Congress granted a charter creating the Protestant Episcopal Cathedral Foundation. In 1907 the foundation stone was laid with Theodore Roosevelt in attendence. The Cathedral was finally finished in 1990 after 83 years of fundraising and building. The National Cathedral is a church for national purposes. The National Catherdral is the sixth largest cathedral in the world. It is built of Indiana limestone and is in the shape of a cross. The nave of the cathedral is one tenth of a mile long. The "Close" or grounsd of the National Cathedral cover 57 acres.
