Christ Church
Christ Church was the first Episcopal Church in Alexandria. The Christ Church construction was completed by John Carlyle in 1773. The church was designed by James Wren in the colonial Georgian style. George Washington and Robert E. Lee were regular worshippers. Other prominent persons have worshipped at Christ Church, including many U.S. presidents. On January 1st, 1942, in order to commemorate the World Day of Prayer for Peace, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt and Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill both attended. After the services, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt and Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill went to Washington's tomb at Mount Vernon to lay a wreath. For
The church was originally in a grove of trees on a hill two blocks beyond the then Alexandria city limits The building was constructed of native brick and the stone trim was from the Aquia Creek quarry south of Alexandria.
